#1089 Newton Abbot Rec - Brillo - 29 Jan 2023

Words by Bollards:

City of Exeter Hashers are obviously too hard core so today’s unremarkable weather kept them all at home – or perhaps some of them were skiing? Personally, I enjoyed not being absolutely frozen sliding about on sheet ice or knee deep in muddy puddles for a change.

The pack of 8 assembled at the Rec where Brillo had left instructions for the trail and just so that everyone was sure they were in the right place, written his name on the fixtures board. I’m not sure how he knew how long it would take as he hadn’t finished laying it and later admitted that he didn’t know the area, but the estimate of 40 50 minutes wouldn’t have been far wrong if we had been 10 minute milers.

The trail was well laid in blue chalk and flour – but I just followed Wide who I could make out in the distance. For once, I didn’t feel that I was likely to get lost. We went through the park, out towards Penn Inn and around the edge of the racecourse. Eventually, we caught up with the hare at the sweetie stop. Brillo explained that he had laid half the trail yesterday and then finished it off this morning. It had felt long and hard for me so far and we hadn’t had the promised long/short split yet, so I was relieved when Brillo said that we were well over half way round and that there wasn’t actually a long, only a short and a medium. (Surely the medium was the long?). Anyway, a few of us went on the medium which took us along the river while the remainder went straight back to the rec along the road.

Next week we're at Ridge Top Park, Old Matford Lane, Exminster. Precise location to follow once Bollards has found some What3Words that she likes
