Pynes Hill - Hole-in-1 - 30th September 2018

When we arrived Hole-in-one was looking a little dejected and alone on the pavement, but she soon cheered up once she saw us(!)  This was the first hash that she'd laid from (near) her new home.  Tampa and Brains appeared rather smartly washed and dressed - they come to drop in a menu for the Xmas meal - on their way to their 40th wedding anniversary celebrations.

It was quite a small pack this week, and quite an overcast morning.  Hole-in-1 told us that she was feeling particularly proud of herself having being able to walk through a field of cows!

We got to see the highs and lows of the Valley Park, on a hilly trail, with the hash taking us all the way down to Topsham Road, with a regroup at the bottom, and sweeties a little way back up. I was apparently 'lost on trail' just because I found myself quite a way ahead.  That shows what can happen when the real athletes aren't around!!

There was lots of childish laughing from Child Catcher and Twin Peaks at the sweetie stop - I've didn't quite work out why.  But the sweeties were numerous and a great variety.  From there, we headed steeply down, across the road, and steeply back up again.  Then down, and up again to a bench, which Mildly Moist decided to enjoy (and was duly fined later).  A treat to finish things off was a fish hook 'for all' before we reached the cars once more.

Next week the hash is from Squabmoor Reservoir, Woodbury Common (SY037844) (map)

Whimple - Spockybitz - 23rd September 2018

It was really cold this morning, and raining too.  This was supposed to have been the trail in The Bitz's new patch, but they have yet to move.  That's being saved up for the Autumn Gathering weekend! We welcomed Megaphone to the hash as a visitor.

Spocky explained that this was one of those trails where he was recce-ing and laying at the same time and that we were to expect a very long long, and another long that he'd given up on!

The trail took us north out of the village, across fields, roads and tracks.  We found ourselves in a field of Christmas trees, or there was a good few of the Spocky-trademarked loops where he would appear like a "creepy old man" (Megaphone's quote) from the undergrowth.  Somehow, by the time we'd got to the sweetie stop, we'd lost Tampa!

He's found his way home though and fines were awarded for nerd naming, late arrivals, and going the wrong way (the second time round - Bullbait)

Stoke Canon - Groucho and Bean Bag - 16th September 2018

Just a small group gathered for the hash this week, for probably our last hash at Bridge Farm.  John 'The Framer' is moving out at the end of the month, and we gathered in this farmyard as he and his family were busy working to help him get ready.

It was a rather small pack, partly because Twin Peaks, Bollards and Child Catcher were taking part in the 10km Killerton Relish Run, Spocky and family are probably moving house (still!), with apologies also sent from Strapo, Swampy and Woodpecker.  But it was great to see HT2 and Mildly Moist back with City of Exeter,

The trail took us through the back gate of the farmhouse, into the field beyond. It was a rutted field, and difficult to r*n.  There was a check, with a ha-ha, and then an early regroup by the road.  This was first of many, many regroups!  The longs took a little detour, before rejoining the shorts, and then right in another field and along the bank, before the second regroup in a field of bailed hay. The bails were in the shape of cylinders, and Rocky tried unsuccessfully to run-and-jump on to one, before Woof-Woof gave him a helping hand.  After a r*n up through the field, we stopped for the sweeties, and then a long-short. Groucho made it very clear that we should not cross the railway line as we ran away from him, and Speedy did his best to confuse things by returning the call (Cross the railway line - yes, we'll cross the railway line!!"

Then across the main road, and a very long way back to where we had been two regroups ago. There were about 5 fish hooks across the field as we returned, but since Groucho had chosen not to come with us, we had no option but to ignore them!  Back alongside the main road, we waited testing the blackberries.  It was at this point when one child, who shall remain nameless, spotted a flag for Kuhn farm machinery, and remarked what it would say if a 't' was added on the end.  I blame the parents...

The trail continued into the village, and then left towards the railway crossing, with more regroups and fish hooks.  Finally back to the main road we were offered a challenge on the trail, or go back via the (dangerous) road bridge.  Opting for the 'challenge' many of us got a refreshing foot wash through the river.

Fines were awarded by all, in order to raise money for a Cancer Charity, in many ways to say thank you to Farmer John for all the times he has allowed us to visit his farm.

Next week the hash is from Whimple Railway Station EX5 2QH (SY045973)

Cranbrook - English Muffin, Baby Bear and Cupcake

The roast was already cooking at the Cranberry Farm by the time we arrived at 11am, and the smell from the extractor fan convinced a few of us that we definitely would be staying for lunch.  Bullbait did a tour of the car park on arrival, apparently so he could park next to us!  The hares warned us that there had been a fun run last weekend, which was marked in red, so they decided to mark the trail in "pinky-purple" - that'll make it absolutely clear then!
The trail took us all around sunny Cranbrook, keeping to the open spaces mostly, and following some of the trail taken by last weeks Tour of Britain stage.  The sweetie stop was not far from the railway station, and we thanked the hares for the many inspiration messages that they had taken time to write on the pavement for the second half of the trail, such as "Work Hard Dream Big and Never Give Up"!.  Lots of loops, and lots of long-short splits - needed careful haring as we crossed the trail a couple of times. But all went well!
In the circle 9which was moved out of the pub car park) Speedy, Stingray and Rocky got fined for short cutting, apparently I had give the wrong postcode on the diary, and Bullbait for driving round the carpark.
A great Sunday lunch was enjoyed by many of us on the pub's patio afterwards

Next week its from Bridge Farm, Stoke Canon EX5 4EE (map, SX938973)

Poachers Inn, Ide - Bobby and Twin Peaks - 2nd September 2018

It was a very small select bunch of hashers who set off on this warm Sunday morning. Trail was laid by Twin Peaks and myself and was the second part of the Ide has started a year ago. The pack headed off in all directions until following the path that took them around the church and off towards West Farm. They then eventually found themselves on the old railway line track to Newton Abbott which they followed for ¾ mile before returning to the road. Then TP had laid the hash through the adjacentstream and under a bridge. Then on up the sweet stop. It was then nearly all downhill back to the Poachers with a range of 3.5 to 5 miles being covered.

Only one fine was issued to Stingray for not paying attention during the circle and he also claimed a record of the number of back arrows run of 10 including one run twice. These youngsters never learn. We also had another youngster who claimed he was a hasher called Groucho. Anybody know him?
