#987 Sampford Peverell - Boots - 25 October 2020

A beautiful warm autumn morning for the 16 hashers who made the journey up the M5 to Sampford. We started off with a welcome from Spocky, but with everyone in attendance having already hashed post-lockdown, it was just a quick safety check as a reminder.  Boots announced the trail as the 2020 Autumn Gathering!

The trail started off going through the village before passing 'Boobery' where all the hash harriets had their photo taken last time we were there. Then up on to the meadows south of the village and through a field of cows who despite a missing Bull Bait, still seemed interested in us! A loop back round into the village again, and up the other side towards the link road, where we had our mid trail safety check (aka sweetie stop) in a field where boots couldn't find his own marks!

Then underneath the main road, and up a long driveway and heading further north to a narrow path through a farm. Down a lane and then back to where we were about 10 minutes earlier, with the trail trail taking us around again. But this time heading away from the farm back down to the link road, and on home along the canal.

Thanks Boots for the trail... So much better than last week's ;-)

Next week we're at RSPB reserve car park, just past the Swans Nest in Exminster for a trail laid by Stix.

#986 Warren Car Park - Spocky - 18th October 2020

20 of us this week, with numbers boosted by the very welcome return of Oddbitz and Wobblybitz, and Boots, Puss, Mischief and Wrecking Ball. Rocky was also back with his broken collar bone!

We suffered the usual problems with parking at the Warren, but everyone found a space by the time our hare returned from his lay.  Spocky had started his lay about 10am, but realized he was still two miles away at nearly 11. So it was about 10 past 11 before we circled up for the Pre-hash safety check!

Then On On with a long-short split to kick off with taking 3 sides of a loop, with the shorts going straight ahead. Speedy seemed to be the FRB this week, with his brother, not supposed to be running, still managing to lead the shorts! Lots of wrong checking from the rest of us as we began to get sweaty on a deceptively warm autumn morning.  While r#nning with Dark Lord, I asked him about his work. I was surprised to hear that he was working for the Co-Op, but then realisied that is misheard his delicate Scottish tones, and he was working for the police.. the 'cops'!

The sweetie stop was about 2.5 miles in, and nicely socially distanced as normal. Although Spocky took a couple of steps back when i told him I'd been with university students this week! And I also learnt that we hadn't seen Oddbitz and Wobbly in person on the hash since January. Happy Snapper did the honours with the photo...

Then on on with another loop, and a discussion about CoViD and American stereotypes with Woof and Drop Off, while Speedy was still leading the pack. Can't really remember what happened next, but it seemed like a hard run before we were on home.

A socially distanced circle to finish to check everyone was back safely. No one spotted that Woodpecker had gone for another little run... although he may have needed a wee!

Thanks Spocky for another mediocre trail (!).

Next week we're at The Globe Inn
14-16 Lower Town, Sampford Peverell, Tiverton EX16 7BJ

#985 King George V Playing Fields, Countess Wear - Speedy & Bollards - 11 October 2020

A fantastic turn out of 16 this week, helped by the glorious weather and central location no doubt. Great to see Zoot, Hot Lips, Rambo and Coat check!

It was Speedy's first 'real' lay, with his mother in tow!  Good job Speedy has a sense of direction and can read a map!!

A welcome and Covid safety check from Spocky, a distribution of sweets, and we were off. The longs did a 1 mile loop around the playing fields before finding themselves back at the car park to rejoin the short. Then up through the houses towards Ludwell Valley Park. Apparently there were bulls in the field at this point, so the hares had to reroute! Then the longs caught up with the shorts, just in time for a socially distanced breather in the warm autumn sun!

Another long short before we headed down Ludwell Lane, and back along the stream to Topsham Road. It was pretty much OnHome from there, past the Crem, following the path to Countess Wear Mill and returning to the car park in just over an hour!

A quick safety circle to check we were all back, and a little refreshment from the back of a car. On On to another Covid secure hash next week (hopefully!).

Next week, we're at The Warren Car Park,
B3180, Woodbury Common EX5 1EZ

#984 East Hill, Ottery St Mary - Howlin' Wilf - 4 Oct 2020

This was the trail that never was... At least until today. Back in March, Howlin' Wilf was supposed to be the trail that followed Wide's in Chudleigh, but then Covid came among.

Bollards welcomed the pack (Stix, Bollards, Rocky, Howlin' Wilf, Wide, Tight, Woodpecker, Tampa) in a purely informational way and reminded us all to keep three metres distance. Straight over to the hare who said something about kilometres (he doesn't do miles), something about it being on the right, and something about conkers (which I never found). After a quick discussion about how you could play conkers while social distancing, we were off.

Up the road to the car park we've used in the past (now no longer a car park) and into the woods. The rain was coming down and it was pretty windy, but the trees kept the worst off. A long-short split, which seemed to involve a couple of steep climbs and a bit of shiggy and we were soon beck together for the NSS (not sweetie stop). But it WAS a sweetie stop because your lovely, kind On Sec provided some individual and sanitised bags at the start! Wide had also nipped into the neighbouring field and acquired for himself a couple of corn on the cob!

Then on on again, with more of the same, muds, hills, trees,  long short split (which was very confusing as we seemed to cover the save tracks twice) and on home.

An excellent 5 mile trail (which seemed like 10) from Howlin' Wilf. A bit of politics discussed in our bubble afterward... Strange for a hash! And a sterilised can of 🍺!

On on to next week from George V playing Fields, Countess Wear, Exeter (map) for Speedy's first solo lay (although Bollards may help a bit). Note it's the car park near the river, off Countess Wear Road, not the main one off Topsham Road.

Covid-19 update and this week's hash

First an update on hashing and the UK covid-19 restrictions from the UK on sec, Dishy Goolies.

Following the recent COVID-19 updates & changes to the law, in response to a letter I sent to the Government department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, I have received the following reply. (Link to reply) ... which acknowledges that the hash is an organisation and the letter sets out what is permissable.

Secondly this week's hash. It's from East Hill Strips (map), 2km east of Ottery St Mary, SY 126 950. Driving up the hill from Ottery, at the top of the steep bit turn right and southwards onto East Hill Strips. Car park is 1 km on the RHS. The hare is Howlin' Wolf.
